Water Taste & Odor

July 2020 – Water Department – If you are experiencing a change in your tap water’s taste and/or odor know that, aside from being unappealing, your water is still clean, safe and the issue is harmless. Again, a taste or odor issue with your water during this time is not dangerous. The culprit of this change is harmless algae growth that occurs during the hot summer months in the surface reservoir that supplies the water that our water plant processes for drinking water.

Many other communities that draw water from surface sources experience similar changes to the water during the summer months when the surface temperature rises. The Town of Johnstown Water Department, like other Water Departments, combats the potential changes by adjusting the treatment process. This includes adding activated carbon to absorb the compounds released by the algae that cause the change in taste and odor.

To note, again, the water is safe and clean and the Water Department is constantly monitoring the water to adjust the treatment process as needed.
