Johnstown, CO – August 21, 2020 – With due regard to the safety of the Johnstown Community and surrounding, the Johnstown Community YMCA Grand Opening event has been postponed to late spring 2021. On account of the recent Statewide fire ban to include fireworks and continued concern about the safety of the community during COVID-19, the decision to postpone the event was not hastily made.
“The decision to postpone was an exceptionally difficult one to make,” said Johnstown Mayor, Gary Lebsack. “But right now, what we know is that we, first and foremost, do not want to risk our community’s safety by hosting the event and setting off fireworks. Secondly, we want this event to be something that is remembered for years, we want to honor, in the best way that we possibly can, the inauguration of the Johnstown Community YMCA.”
The Town and the YMCA were very excited to be celebrating the new partnership in a week’s time at the event on August 29 and were working exhaustively with State and Local health departments to plan a safe event that the community could be proud of. Unfortunately, the event was starting to lose much of the pomp and circumstance that the community deserved and with the limitation on fireworks, the event was no longer going to reflect the significance of this new community pillar and would potentially put our community at risk in this hot and dry climate.
“It’s heart breaking to know that this decision will come as a disappointment for our neighbors. However, with the synergy and energy of this community, next year we will be able to come together for an event that displays the true spirit of Johnstown,” said Johnstown Community YMCA Executive Director, Keith Williams. “We look forward to celebrating what will truly be a safe and memorable event, and we look forward to finally showing everything that the Y has to offer.”
The Town and YMCA, together, appreciate how excited the community was to come together after what has been a rather unconventional year and shares your disappointment in the cancellation of another event. The Town is hopeful for an incredible event next year, which will include the 1 year anniversary, but, for now, the Town and YMCA wish the best to those communities who are battling fires and smoke across Colorado.
